Update from Dominican Republic Day One

I have found internet (although a bat just flew by while I’m typing this.)  The things I do for you folks at home. :)

We are off to a great start here in the Dominican.  The team of seven arrived yesterday (Friday) around 4:30 pm.  We left JC at 2:00 am on Friday so it was a  long day.  We thank Sammie and Ruth Willhite for driving us to the airport at such an awful time of day!

We made it through customs in the DR without too many problems which is pretty miraculous.  Thanks for the prayers.  All luggage arrived and they let us through with all of our medication. Praise the Lord.

Phil and Donna Williams picked us up at the airport and brought us to our hotel. We had about an hour to get settled and freshened up before enjoying a long supper and visit with the Williams and some summer missionaries.  We were one exhausted group – most having been up for 40 hours.

Today we sorted out all the wonderful items we brought – thanks to YOU!  The donations were so amazing.  We had every bag stuffed and still have more to bring on the next trip. We then met Donna for a walking tour around the Sosua downtown area.  It helps to get our bearings and to know where things are near-by incase we need water or chocolate …. :)

After lunch we traveled to the various ministries that Phil and Donna oversee so that the team could visit them.  We went to the Danica clinic and school first and got to spend some great time with some children there.  We then traveled to a church/school that is still being constructed.  We saw it in June and it is coming along nicely.

Last, we traveled to Liberation where we will be working all week.  They had planned a ground-breaking celebration this afternoon with several local pastors, leaders and media.  It was an amazing celebration as the church announced their plans to build the much needed medical clinic.  The local people are so thankful for it.

And in a surprise, they announced that they are officially naming the clinic the “Dr. Lory Feeler Center for Health”.  Lory wasoverwhelmed and so moved.  Of course, since it was announced in public, she had no opportunity to refuse such a honor.  They certainly think a lot of her, her love for the people in this area and the church’s commitment to partner here. We are so proud of our Dr. Lory!

Many blessings to each of you and thank you for the continued prayers.  I should be able to update each night so please continue to check back.

Also, I will be posting pictures as we go at our website at http://picasaweb.google.com/fbcjcmo.
